I am a telephone wire
Strung precariously between two posts
Birds sleep on my shoulders
And sing audaciously over
The electric current of my arms
I'm decorated by generations of shoes
Dangling tauntingly by laces
These are no ordinary footpaths
Cross at your own risk
But know the foundation is crumbling
You see
We don't burn bridges
In the same way we don't shoot our prisoners
We deal with things but leaving them to rot
Forget mp3s, streaming TV, limewire
We are the live wire
We're sailing the world wide wave
And casting anchor in your eyes
This is disorientation, disinformation, dysfunction
This is...probably a Youtube video
Which you will post on friend number 999's
Facebook wall
Have you ever heard of the Great Wall of China?
The Berlin Wall?
Do you know the walls of your own city...?
Scenery split by my electric current arms
Struggling for an embrace
Do you understand anything
Not fed to you by a screen or microwave?
Do you understand
The soft touch of another person's hand
On your own?
People used to be attached to phone numbers
Rather than a Myspace rank
Dialing a memorized set of digits was intimate
How far our fingertips have gone
Baby, make love to my wires
I'm stretched over the beds of valleys, rivers, and roads
All for you
Would you believe me if I told you
We just need pen and paper
Instead of typing right into the blogosphere?
Would you believe me if I told you
Diaries used to be private?
The world doesn't care about our mundane problems
Would you believe me if I told you
That you don't need the internet for friends?
There are a million empty hands
Reaching out around you every day
Would you believe me if I told you
That you are not alone?
That you are never alone...?
And it's actually kind of scary...?
Would you believe me if I told you
It's okay to be alone?
Go ahead
Pick up the phone and send your electricity
Through the veins strung precariously
Between the posts formed naturally by my body
On crumbling ankles
I'm speaking dial tone
Web pages are building chasms that split these posts
And drop shoes into a pixelated canyon
It makes me wonder
When will thought be outdated?
When will a hug or kiss or love be outdated?
When will we become operating systems
And just be a Mac or PC?
Will social networking sites
Ever make us social?
Will cancer be just a virus?
A code we send each other out of spite?
Will starving children in Africa
Be the only survivors
Because they lack the technology to die
In a modern fashion?
Is sex just interactive porn?
Will you ever hold my hand again?
Tell me we're more than two palms
Pressed to the prison glass of computer screens
When did text messages replace whispers?
When did touch phones replace touch?
I am willing to cut you down to your circuits
And write a new code for love
With my own hands
I will learn the language of the machines
To reinvent honesty
Once upon a time
They called this a love letter
But I'm no more than an old-fashioned telephone wire
And I'll be cut down soon
The new, wireless world has no room for my poetry
But can I ask you
Do you believe everything you see?
Look at me...
Would you believe me if I told you...?
one of my proudest of my slams =)
it's ironic that i write about this. i need to keep myself realistic i suppose, and remind myself that having a facebook app on my iphone isn't the best idea, and having an iphone really isnt necessary either. i'm an addict!

Add me, I'm real and need to see clear.

Maslow will not be proved wrong in the eyes of history the way that will will be if we do not adequately address the crises that face all of our people together.
